About Jerry Seinfeld

Jerry Seinfeld was born in Brooklyn, New York City, on April 29, 1954. He was raised in Massepequa on Long Island, and attended Massepequa High School, attending State University of New York at Oswego after graduating high school, and before transferring to Queens College, City University of New York after his second year, where he graduated with a degree in communications and theater.

Career

Early career

Whilst at college, Seinfeld developed an interest in comedy, having performed in various college productions. He cut his teeth on the comedy circuit at open-mic nights at Budd Friedman's Improv Club during his time at Queens College. One night, after he graduated, he performed at an open-mic night at New York City's Catch a Rising Star, leading to an appearance in a Rodney Dangerfield HBO special.

Four years later, he landed a small recurring role on the ABC sitcom Benson, but the role was short-lived and he was fired due to creative differences.

In the spring of 1981, Seinfeld was invited to perform on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. His appearance made an impression on Carson, who went on to book him for more. He was also popular with the audience, and began making frequent appearances on other talk shows, including Late Night with David Letterman. By the late-1980s, he was one of the most sought-after and popular stand-up comedians on television.

In 1987, HBO aired his first live comedy special, Stand-Up Confidential.

Seinfeld

In 1988, Seinfeld created a 23-minute pilot with Larry David for NBC called The Seinfeld Chronicles. The show was renamed, simply, Seinfeld and centered around the day-to-day New York life of a fictionalized version of Seinfeld, as well as his best friend George (a caricature of Larry David, played by Jason Alexander), his friend and former girlfriend Elaine (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and his neighbor Cosmo (Michael Richards). The show aired for nine seasons, from 1989-1998, and grew steadily more popular until it became, by its fourth season, the best-loved and most successful sitcom on American television. It is regarded by many to be one of the greatest and most influential sitcoms of all time, and was still the highest-rated show in the United States when its final episode aired in 1998. Seinfeld himself is the only actor/character to appear in every episode of the show. He won a Primetime Emmy Award, an American Comedy Award, a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award for his work on the show.

Post-Seinfeld

After the sitcom ended, Seinfeld decided to reignite his stand-up career, and returned to New York City. He embarked upon a 1998 tour and recorded the comedy special I'm Telling You for the Last Time, which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Comedy Album the following year. He continued to perform stand-up shows and tours over the next few years, and his 2002 backstage and behind-the-scenes process was chronicled in a documentary about comedy called Comedian.

Throughout the rest of the 1990s and early-2000s, he scored several syndication deals, appearing in commercials for Apple and American Express.

In 2006, Seinfeld appeared in a cameo on Saturday Night Live the assassin of the episode's host, Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

2007 saw a brief return to TV for Seinfeld, who presented the Best Documentary award at the 79th Academy Awards in February, alongside a short stand-up routine. That October, he also guest-starred as himself on Tina Fey's comedy show 30 Rock, in the episode "SeinfeldVision." He also co-wrote, co-produced and starred in the 2007 DreamWorks animated film Bee Movie.

In March 2009, Seinfeld appeared for a reunion with the entire cast of Seinfeld in the finale of the seventh season of Larry David's Curb Your Enthusiasm. He also starred as himself on an episode of the Starz comedy show Head Case. That September, he appeared as the first guest on the Jay Leno Show.

Seinfeld executive produced and occasionally starred as a panelist on the NBC reality show and panel game The Marriage Ref, which premiered in 2010 and ran for two seasons.

In 2011, he embarked on a stand-up tour in the US and in the UK – his first time touring there in 11 years. He was also a surprise guest on The Daily Show, and appeared in the HBO special Talking Funny, alongside fellow comedians Chris Rock, Louis C.K., and Ricky Gervais.

He premiered the web series talk show Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, which he created, hosts and directs, in June 2012 on Crackle. The popular show moved to Netflix in 2018 and has now run for 11 seasons.

In September 2017, Netflix released Seinfeld's most recent standup comedy special, Jerry Before Seinfeld.
